Week 12 Wednesday

My Army’s Bigger Than Your Army

Today’s scripture selection: Psalms 33-35

Key verse: Psalm 33:17

“No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;             despite all its great strength it cannot save.     But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,            on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.”

We live in a world where so often the motto is “Might is Right.”

It’s all about who has the most money; the most power; the most influence; the biggest gun; the biggest bomb; the biggest and most powerful…whatever.

We shouldn’t be surprised by this.  That’s how it has always been – and I suspect how it will always be – as long as “we” are in charge.

But the Bible shows us another way.

It’s clear about the fact that ultimately, God is the only one in charge – after all – He created it all and sustains it all by His will.

Now, I’m not naïve.  I am not proposing we dissolve our country’s military or do away with the local police force.  In a broken, sin filled world, it makes sense to be able to defend oneself and one’s loved ones.  And, for all its faults, I will take my country’s way of doing things over the brutal dictatorships that dot the globe.

All I am is saying is that the scriptures call us to remember that the day in which we place our ultimate hope in how big and tough and strong and smart we are – that’s the day we lose our real security.

I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of our world’s problems.  And I am more than happy to let people smarter than I try and keep things as stable as possible.

But in my own small world of daily challenges I’ll tell you this.  My hope is in God and God alone.

     How about you?

Prayer: Almighty God, I thank you for watching over us with such loving care.  Help me to always trust in it – and you.  AMEN.
