No Greener Pastures
Today’s scripture selection: Psalms 21-23

Of all the beloved scriptures of the Bible, I suppose there are none more recognized, and revered, than those of Psalm 23.
Even those who know almost nothing of the faith are familiar with these words:
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
But as familiar as these words are, how many really take them to heart? When you observe how many go through their lives grappling for position, or power, or security, or peace – well, it’s as if they never heard of this simple shepherd’s prayer.
On the other hand, take these words to heart, really believe them, and there is little that can steal your peace.
There are no greener pastures, no stiller waters, than those that God lovingly provides. And though some take offense at the idea of people being called “sheep” I have always found it to be a particularly comforting idea.
Now I am no shepherd – that is of actual sheep. I know little about their feeding habits; sleeping habits; what spooks them at night.
But I am a shepherd of a small congregation of believers. And, having been a pastor for over a quarter of a century, I know quite a bit about what spooks people and keeps them up at night. I know how deeply scarred we can become by life’s cruel twists. I know how many questions can remain unanswered. I know evil is real – and that, if you let it, it will eat you for lunch without hesitation.
I also know that the shepherd’s Psalm is absolutely true. If you will let him, God will lead you to the place you cannot find for yourself. And I know that, even though you might live in the middle of the busiest city, God can and will show you how to find quiet waters that refresh your soul.
“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
The shepherd is waiting – follow Him today – He knows the way.
Prayer: Loving Shepherd, lead me where you will, now and always. AMEN.

Great words for thought and contemplation Paul! So glad to have found your posting and blog today via Facebook. I hope you’re well. It’s been a good while so we got those few men together at Holly Grove to meet. I encourage you to mark your calendar for the weekend after Easter; April 25-27.
